INSTALLING
==========

If you have obtained the shareware version you should have a compressed
ZIP file called something like AUTS110.ZIP.
You just uncompress it with

PKUNZIP AUTS110 C:\GAMES\AUTS

where C:\GAMES\AUTS is the directory you wish the game be placed.
ZIP file contains the following files:

        AUTS.EXE                123 936 bytes      (v1.10   102 176 bytes)
        RESOURCE.DAT             98 620 bytes      (v1.10         - bytes)
        MARBLE1.FNT
        SMALLREG.FNT
        AUTS.DOC
        REGISTER.FRM
        *.LEV ( four level files in shareware version )

If you have registered version you just copy the contents of the disk
wherever you want.

*** Note and save *** AUTS.REK file on the disk.

To register further releases of AUTS you just copy this file to the directory
the new version of AUTS has been installed to. No extra pay then, of
course.

FOR REGISTERED USERS
--------------------

If you wish to distribute AUTS to BBSs (actually you're encouraged to), please
distribute the pre-packed zip file (AUTS116.ZIP) which is also on the disk.

RUNNING
=======

You will need at least a 386 PC ( +MATH COPROCESSOR WITH VERSIONS <1.1 ).
Also VGA monitor is essential. SBlaster sound effects are available
from version 1.15. (Yes, they work with GUS too. Tested with three
different SB emulators.) Keyboard is also recommended. No EMS or XMS memory is
needed, but unfortunately quite a lot of conventional memory must be free;
something like 605k with sounds and 540k without. You run AUTS.EXE to start
the game. By default the game will run at 36 frames per second. A 486DX/33
with a SLOW video card will make it just barely. (Some people find the game
enjoyable even with lower frame rates). Computers that cannot perform 36 fps
will run at full speed by default, though there will be a small white dot
in the upper right corner of the screen indicating the loss of frames.
Also, you can increase the framerate if you have a powerful computer.
You can type

AUTS.EXE -F nn

where nn is the desired framerate (20<nn<80). Again there will be the white
dot if the game is not making fast enough.

The players who dislike waiting the menus to zoom in and out try running
AUTS with option -3 . This will disable all zooming activity.

*** IMPORTANT NOTE ***

If you don't have a SBlaster compatible sound card, AUTS may hang in sound
card detection phase. Run

AUTS -M 0

to avoid troubles. -M option is also used to set the number of digital
effects. Default (and upper limit) is -M 4 , that is four digital effects.
There may be a slight performance improvement on slow computers if effects
are limited to 2.

KEYBOARD CONCEPTS
=================

There are no computer controlled vessels currently. Therefore you need
a partner or two that play AUTS against you.
The ships are controlled with the following keys:

RED SHIP:
        Thrust - Numpad 8 (arrow up)
        Turn - Numpad 4 (arrow left)
        Turn the other way - Numpad 6 (arrow right)
        Gun shooting            - Right shift
        Special weapon shooting - Numpad 5 (arrow down)

GREEN SHIP:
        Thrust                  - W
        Turn                    - A
        Turn the other way - D
        Gun shooting            - TAB
        Special weapon shooting - S

YELLOW SHIP:
        Thrust                  - I
        Turn                    - J
        Turn the other way - L
        Gun shooting            - B
        Special weapon shooting - K

*** NEW IN 1.20 ***

BLUE SHIP:
        Very normal controls with joystick 1:
        button 1 is the regular fire,
        button 2 is the special weapon.
        ( Gravis GamePad's autofire feature will be pretty nasty here :)

        *** NOTE *** that joystick is calibrated right after you run AUTS.
        To work correctly, the joystick must be centered at that time. No
        further calibrations can be done. (Some computers/joysticks when
        exposured to heat alter the resistivity, i.e. after very long
        sessions the calibration might slightly disadjust. As a remedy you
        can only re-run AUTS.)

In the menus and other miscellaneous screens press
        RETURN to accept selections, continue game ...
        VERTICAL ARROWS to move the pointer
        HORIZ ARROWS to change selections
        ESC to go back to main menu, abort the game and quit to dos ...
        P for pause
        R to randomize weaponry
        Numbers 1..8 to select randomly the appropriate number of levels

SOME VITAL INFORMATION
======================

After each match you will be presented a statistics screen
(with a nice gouraud trophy in the back).
The information for the players is:

        F - number of shots WITH REGULAR GUN
        H - hit accuracy WITH REGULAR GUN
        C               - collisions to ground
        I               - number of civilian(+trooper) casualties
        most bottom - score ie. number of matches won.

FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS
===================

The following ideas POSSIBLY will be implemented:

        - new weapons will come out every now and then
        - four,five or six player mode (via modem or cables. If someone is
          willing to provide me with information on the modem communications
          topic please leave e-mail to me. I'd be grateful.)

TROUBLESHOOTING
===============

Runtime error 002

        Means that one or more of the necessary files are missing
        (MARBLE1.FNT,SMALLREG.FNT,RESOURCE.DAT,*.LEV). Just copy them to
        the appropriate directory and try again.

Runtime error 203

        is due to low conventional memory. Try to free a bit more of it
        ( 605k needed with sounds ) or run with -M 0 option ( 540k
        without sounds ).

Runtime error 207
(if the game regularly hangs)

        This really is a tough bug ! It has occurred only on one
        particular computer and one particular hard drive (a Seagate).
        Probably an error due to incompatibility problems.
        The game should still work without sounds OR you could try
        installing the game to another directory (another hard drive if
        you have two separate physical drives).

No other runtime errors have ever occurred. Please drop me a line or two
(via e-mail) if you experience any errors.

It is possible that SBlaster detection hangs the computer if you do not have
a SBlaster (or appropriate emulator) or have some other not-so-nice adapter
cards plugged in. Option -M 0 should remedy this problem though you won't
be able to enjoy the sounds then.

ABOUT REGISTRATION
==================

AUTS is being spread under the Shareware concept. So, if you
continue playing AUTS you should pay the registration fee of 40 FIM.
You will receive THE LATEST VERSION OF AUTS REGISTERED PERSONALLY TO YOU
PLUS ALL THE LEVELS I HAVE CREATED. ( Also, if my schedule allows I'll
write a level editor for the registered users. At the moment I have a kind
of it ready but it's outfit isn't up to the standards. ) Please fill in the
ordering form in REGISTER.FRM and send it in an envelope along with the money
to:

        A-MORE / Jaakko Lyytinen
        *********tie 3 B
        00*** HKI
        FINLAND

You will receive your disk in a week ( depending on the posting
procedures ). Unregistered version is fully functional (except the reduced
assortment of levels) and there are no nasty nag screens, but by paying
you support shareware coding and encourage me to develop and write new
games. All the money will be put to improvings of my well-being... :-)

ABOUT THE KUDOS
===============

The KUDOS is a very young demo group and at the moment it isn't
even sure whether we will continue in demo scene. Anyway, I personally
will code till the old days ( demos, games, utilities, whatever... ).
We are only two in the KUDOS:

        A-MORE: coding,art,managing,cooking...
        LESS: music,graphics,(maybe Amiga ports)...

If you want to contact us please write to A-MORE. The snail mail address is
somewhere in this document. You can also reach me via Internet e-mail with
address jlyde@mits.*****.fi.

                        Signed,
                        A-MORE / THE KUDOS
