4 Other stuff (legal, greez etc. Read!)

1. Before you start playing

1.1. System requirements:

   - M.S.DOS. And I don't mean Windows(3.1/95/98) DOS-Shell.

   - Pentium 120Mhz or better (game works also with old 486DXs, but then it's
     too slow to be enjoyable).

   - About 4 MB of free hard disk space.

   - 256 colour VGA.

   - Sound cards supported by Midas Sound System:
     + Sound Blaster 16/Pro/1.0/1.5/2.0
     + GUS
     + Pro Audio Spectrum/plus/16

   - Good nerves and fast reflexes :)

1.2. Configure your sound card - Msetup

     Midas Sound System
copyright 1995 Petteri Kangaslampi and Jarno Paananen

Before you can run beez.exe to start playing, you need to configure
your sound card. Beez uses Midas Sound System to produce sound and to
     play music during the game.

+ Run Msetup.exe, that came packed with other files.

   + Follow instructions:

     Note:
Msetup will automatically detect the proper values of your sound card,
so you really don't have to do anything else here but to press ENTER
     to confirm choises.

   - Choose your sound card from the list (detected automatically).
   - Choose sound card I/O port address.
   - Choose sound card IRQ.
   - Choose sound card DMA channel number.
   - Choose mixing rate 8000Hz - 441000Hz. (441000 is a bit high, since all
     sounds are 8-bit).
   - Select output mode.
   - That's it. Msetup will create a MIDAS.CFG file and you are ready
     to toast some insect ass.

2 Playing Beez

Run Beez.exe. Be sure you have run Msetup.exe before you do this. See
instructions above. First you will see a small intro section. You can
skip it by pressing SPACE or ESC.

2.1. After the intro part a Menu screen appears. From here you can
adjust variables, that affect the game performance.

You can choose menu items by using arrow keys of your keyboard.

     Menu items:

   - NEW GAME
Press ENTER here to start a new game.

   - OLD GAME
If you have already played and have saved your game, you can continue
playing by using this option. Choose OLD GAME and press the number (1-5)
to load your game. Of course if you haven't played before,
all five save slots are empty. Every saved game starts from the begining
of the level the game was saved at.

   - SOUNDS
Press ENTER to switch sound FX on/off.

   - MUSIC
Press ENTER to switch music on/off.

   - SMOOTH (scrolling)
Press ENTER to switch retracing on/off. If this option is on, game
will run much smoother and there won't be any "clipping" in the
graphics. Recommended only for Pentiums faster than 150Mhz.

   - PALLARX
Press ENTER to switch pallarx scrolling off/on.
If you have a slow processor, it might help a little if you turn this
option off. If this option is off, game will not draw any background
     graphics.

   - HARD
By using arrow keys left and right, you can adjust game difficulty.
     There a 3 difficulty levels:

     1.Easy:
       - 15 Levels.
       + Saving a game won't cost a life.
     2.Normal:
       + 19 Levels.
       - Saving a game costs 1 life.
       - Enemys take more shots to kill.
       - You loose more energy if you get shot or hit an enemy.
       + You get more points.
+ You get more grenades/missiles/time bombs.
     3.Hard:
       + 21 Levels.
       - Saving a game costs 1 life.
       - Enemys take even more shots to kill.
       - You loose even more energy if you get shot or hit an enemy.
+ You get even more points.
+ You get even more grenades/missiles/time bombs.

   - QUIT
Nah. You don't really want to quit do ya?

2.2. Game Features

2.3. Missions:

Game starts with a briefing. Your commander will tell you your
missions. After you have succesfully completed them, level is cleard.
     Different missions are:

   - Find exit.

Exit is hidden somewhere in the level. You must find out where it is.
Remember, all other missions must be complete before you can exit the
     level.

   - Save all eggs.

After bees nest was destroyed, all eggs were stolen. You must find them
all and return them. You can see the number of remaining eggs at
the down left corner of the screen. Some enemys carry eggs with them so
you will have to eliminate them first to be able to get the eggs.

   - Kill 'em all.

Do I need to say more? You have a gun and a clip with an unlimited
amount of bullets. You will know what to do.

Missions can also be combinations of these and may have several goals.

2.4. Screen Features

There are many different things you must keep an eye on during the
     game:

   - Energy. If it runs out you're dead and you loose one life. You loose
energy if you are hit by a bullet or an enemy touches you
     or you fly into spikes.
Collect energy-bonuses to get more energy.

   - Bees. If you run out of bees, your game is over. Bees are important also
because you loose one every time you save your game (except
     at easy-difficulty level).

   - Fly power. When you fly, your wings get tired. Wing-O-Meter shows
you how tired your wing are. If the meter is nearly finished, you should
land somewhere to rest for a while and to wait that the meter is fully
charged. If the meter runs out you won't be able to fly for a while. And
     that makes you pretty helpless.

2.5. Game Controls

   Moving:
     Arrow up = fly/swim/climb up.
Arrow down = swim down/climb down.
     Arrow right = fly/swim right.
     Arrow left = fly/swim left.
   Shooting:
     SPACE       = Shoot.
     ALT         = Use 2nd weapon = Throw grenade/set time bomb/shoot missile.
     SHIFT       = Change 2nd weapon.
   Other:
F1 = Help. Press ENTER to exit.
F2 = Save game. Press 1,2,3,4 or 5 to save the game or press
ENTER to return back to the game.
Note: If difficulty is set to normal or hard, saving a
                   game costs 1 life.
     - = Decrease game speed. If you are playing with
pentium VI with 1555550Mhz, the game maybe too fast :)
                   This might help.
+ = Speeds up game. Only works if you have already decreased
                   game speed.
CTRL = Show target. One egg is missing? Can't find exit? This
might give you a clue where it is.
     PAUSE/BREAK = Pause game.
Q = Kill the bee (if you get stuck).
ESC = Quit playing and return to Menu.

2.6. Weapons

There are 4 different weapons in this game.

You can see a box at the right down corner of the screen. The box
shows witch 2nd weapon is active. If the box is empty, you do not have
     2nd weapons.

   - Gun
Your basic weapon, that you'll have from the start. The gun has 5
     different basic levels:

     1. Machine gun.
     2. PingPong-plasma.
     3. Three way.
     4. Five way.
     5. Lazzzer.

To increase gun level pick up ammo-bonuses.

     2nd weapons:

   - Grenades / Time bombs

Grenades are a power weapon to eliminate enemys. They can also be
used to clear obstacles such as rocks, barrels and walls. You can
drop the grenade by just pressing ALT or trow it by pressing arrow up at
     the same time.

If you have grenades, you can also use time bombs. One time bomb
requires 5 grenades. When you set a time bomb, it will blow after
few seconds. It explodes also if an enemy touches it.

CAUTION: Do not stand close to a exploding bomb or a grenade ;)

     Many levels require

Pick up grenade-bonuses to increase the amount of grenades and bombs.

   - Missiles

Missiles fly stright and explode when they hit a wall or enemy. Missiles
can also be used to clear obstacles. If used right, missiles are the
most powerfull weapon in this game.

2.7. Bonuses

Bonuses are balls, that have a letter inside.
     The letters are:

     A = Increase gun's level.
     B = Increase your score.
P = Increase number of bees.
E = Increase amount of energy.
G = Increase amount of grenades / time bombs.
M = Increase amount of missiles.

     Also:

Eggs = you must collect all of them.

2.8. A Few of Your Common Foes.

     Banzai Mosquito:

Not very bright guy, but if they come in many, they can be dangerous.
There are hundreds of them so expect to encounter masses of these.

     Dragon Fly:

These originally friendly creatures were brainwashed by The Evil
Leader of Insect Rebellion. Now they drop grenades on you and
     shoot you with missiles.

     Athletic Ant:

These fellows can't fly, but with their 3 way guns they can do a lot of
damage to you. They also take a large amount of shots, so it is best
to deal these fellows with explosives.

     Freak Fly:

These meanies are armed with lazer guns and practice shoot & run tactics.
They carry eggs with them so it is important to get them, before
     they get you.

3 Troubleshooting:

   - If the game is too slow
At Menu screen switch smooth and pallarx off.

   - If the game is too fast
At Menu screen switch smooth on. You can also adjust game speed during
the game by using plus and minus buttons.

   - Game won't start
     - Be sure, that you are not under windows. If you are, close windows and
       start at M.S.DOS.
     - Did you run msetup before running beez.exe? If you didn't, see
       section 1.2.
     - Be sure, that your system meets the game's requirements. See section
       1.1.
     - Beez needs all data files included to the original BEEZ.ZIP - file.
If you have an incomplete version of Beez, visit our homepage at:
       http://koti.mbnet.fi/~kiwi/deepconnection
       and download the latest version.

   - If you do not have enough memory:
If you do not have enough memory you will get an error message
(MIDAS error or a run-time error). Try following:

     - Try creating a boot disk.
     - Restart computer from M.S.DOS.
     - Run Beez using following commandlines:

BEEZ -nomusic (load only sound effects, no musics)

BEEZ -nofx (load only musics, no sound effects)

BEEZ -nosound (do not load sounds nor musics)

You can also run Beez without memory checking using commandline:
BEEZ -nomemorycheck (do not check if there is enough memory)
...but game may crash if there is not enough free memory to use.
