1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

- 500KB of free memory
- 3MB of disk space
- VGA card & display
- Mouse (for editor only)
- Keyboard
- Pentium or equal. Absolute minimum is a fast 80486 (probably 100 MHZ)

Optional:
- Sound Blaster sound card

When you run the program first time the machine speed is checked and the
sound configuration is checked. Choose No sound if you haven't got SB card.

                               ----==#####==----

2. KNOWN PROBLEMS

- CT-VOICE.DRV 4.05 doesn't work. Version 3.07 works better. This version
  is included in SND folder.
- Sound Blaster 64 PCI doesn't work. And I guess no other PCI cards either.
This is not my fault, since PCI cards' DOS support is inadequate.
- The sounds play probably only with genuine SoundBlaster cards, since
100% SBPro compatible card doesn't work.

                               ----==#####==----

3. THE GAME

3.1 The Story

Because of the growing unrestlessness around tomorrow's world USA has began
to give licences to mercenary firms. You are a new mercenary in the
Mercenary Organization. The MO does professional jobs, not just simple
assassination jobs. The MO gives you missions which you complete. Or fail.

3.2 Setup

First you must create a character. This is done in SETUP program. When you
run the game first time you find yourself in Setup. Later you can run this
program by selecting Setup & character from main menu.

Scroll the menu with up & down keys

- Sound Setup

- Create character
+ You must deliver all points to skills. Use arrow keys and PgUp/PgDn
+ N lets you to write the name to your character
+ Press Enter when ready. If red text appears on the bottom of the screen,
check that item. Press Y to save the character, N to discard it.

- Edit character: keys, face, game delay, mission directory, campaign file

 CAMPAIGN
The player may choose to go into a campaign which consists of number of
consecutive missions. During the campaign other missions are unavailable.
The campaign may be ended from this same menu.

- Exit (to Dos or to the game)

- C to view credits

- S for Speed test

3.3 The game

Scroll the menu with up & down keys

- Select character
+ If your character is wounded, pressing space speeds time up. Character
gets better but may lose some skill points.
+ Press Enter when ready to return to main menu

- Missions: You must have a character selected to enter this section

- Setup & character: Runs the Setup program

- Exit

Follow onscreen helps. They explain a lot.

During the game following keys are always the same:

F1 Decrease delay (=faster)
F2 Increase delay (=slower)
F3 Toggle Field Of Vision
F4 Show keys
F5 Show mission description and IR view of mission area
Esc Cancel/End game

Wounds
When your character gets hit, the edge of the screen flashes red. The
background of the hitplace (e.g. L ARM) turns red when it is bleeding. To
stop bleeding, press 'Tie wounds' button (H is default key). If the bleeding
still continues, tie wounds again. In this case the wound is so large that
it wasn't tied at the first time. First aid kit speeds up the process.

If you see an 'E' to appear next to your hitplace status it means your
target is wounded in that position.

Ending missions
Remember that if the character is lost, it is LOST forever. The only ways
out of mission are success, failure, or death. Cancel is not an option.

To end mission correctly go to the End point (shown in F5 display) and
press Esc. You know that you're on right spot when XY on the right lights up.
The end point is usually the same as the begin point.

To end mission succesfully you must complete all tasks and then return to
end point. Then the word 'Completed' appears on the right.

3.4 Gameplay tips

- Remember the Field Of Vision. Even if you don't see anything there may be
something. You may see a red square on the black areas. Somebody is in
  that direction.
- Turn your head while moving. The sight area is 180 degrees, but sometimes
it just isn't enough. When turning your head you see the whole 360 degrees.
- Remember to walk silently. The sound you make depends on surface you are,
how fast you are going and how good you are at 'Stealth' skill. Don't run
around - you are easy to spot when you make a lot of noise.
- Walk crouch whenever possible. You are harder to detect when you have low
profile. Prone is good also, but slows down and reduces Stamina.
- Keep your stamina high. Green color is good, red is bad. The lower the
stamina the less you have strength. Running depletes stamina. If you fire
a high-power weapon the kickback is harder when stamina is low, and takes
  more time!
- Select suppressed weapons whenever possible, and avoid using noise-making
explosives. The enemies will detect you easier if you use loud weapons.
- The enemies have paths that they use when they are not disturbed. You may
  take advantage of that.
- Use shielding. This can be the matter of life and death. One shot may kill.
- Aim in the head. It's harder to hit in the head, but it's the most efficient
way to knock the enemy out.
- Stairs may be tricky with 'followers' which should follow you. Try reducing
the 'follower dist' to minimum and go to up/down block but DO NOT press
Action button yet. Wait until the follower 'disappears' and then go.
- The police will not normally fire towards you if you keep low profile.
Carrying a rifle is NOT low profile, so keep your total equipment load
  under 5 kg's.

                               ----==#####==----

1. LAITEVAATIMUKSET

- 500KT vapaata muistia
- 3 MT levytilaa
- VGA-kortti ja näyttö
- Hiiri (vain editori)
- Näppäimistö
- Pentium tai vastaava. 80486 on ehdoton minimi.

Valinnainen:

                               ----==#####==----

2. ONGELMAT

- CT-VOICE.DRV 4.05 ei toimi. Versio 3.07 toimii, ja tämä versio on pelin
  mukana SND-hakemistossa.
- Sound Blaster 64 PCI ei toimi, eikä ehkä mikään muukaan PCI-kortti, koska
  niiden DOS-yhteensopivuus on huono.
- Ilmeisesti äänet toimivat vain aidoilla SoundBlaster-korteilla, koska
100% SBPro yhteensopivatkaan kortit eivät soita ääniä.

                               ----==#####==----

3. PELI

3.1 Taustoja

Huomispäivän maailman rauhattomuuden vuoksi Yhdysvallat ja monet muutkin
länsimaat ovat alkaneet myöntämään lisenssejä palkkasoturiyhtymille. Olet
yksi näistä palkkasotureista Mercenary Organizationin listoilla. MO suorittaa

3.2 Setup

Pelataksesi sinun on luotava hahmo. Tämä tehdään SETUP-ohjelmassa. Kun ajat
pelin ensimmäistä kertaa löydät itsesi Setupista. Myöhemmin voit ajaa tämän
ohjelman valitsemalla pelin alkuvalikosta 'Setup & character'.

Kelaa valikkoa ylös & alas -nuolilla

- Sound Setup (äänet)

- Create character (luo hahmo)
+ Kaikki taitopisteet pitää jakaa. Käytä nuolia ja PgUp/PgDn -näppäimiä
+ N antaa mahdollisuuden kirjoittaa hahmon nimen
+ Kun olet valmis, paina Enteriä. Jos punainen teksti ilmestyy ruudun
alalaitaan, tarkista kyseinen kohta. Kysymysruudun tullessa paina Y
tallentaaksesi hahmon, ja N hylätäksesi sen.

- Edit character (muuta hahmoa): näppäimet, kuva, viive, tehtävähakemisto,
  kampanjatiedosto

  KAMPANJA
Pelaaja voi pelata kampanjaa mikä koostuu peräkkäisistä eri tehtävistä.
Kampanjan aikana muut tehtävät eivät ole mahdollisia. Kampanjan voi
  lopettaa tästä samasta menusta.

- Exit (poistu)

- C näyttää tietoja pelin tekoon osallistuneista

- S suorittaa nopeustestin

3.3 Peli

Kelaa valikkoa ylös & alas -nuolilla

- Select character (valitse hahmo)
+ Jos hahmo on haavoittunut, paina välilyöntiä nopeuttaaksesi ajan
kulumista.

  valittuna

- Setup & character: Ajaa Setup-ohjelman

- Exit

Seuraa ruudulla näkyviä ohjeita. Ne selittävät melko paljon.

Pelin aikana seuraavat näppäimet ovat vakiot:

F1 Vähennä viivettä (=nopeammaksi)
F2 Lisää viivettä (=hitaammaksi)
F3 Vaihda näkökentän tyyppiä
F4 Näytä näppäinkaavio
F5 Näytä tehtävän kuvaus ja satelliittikuva maastosta (infrapuna)
Esc Keskeytä/Lopeta peli

Haavoittuminen
Kun hahmo haavoittuu, ruudun reuna välähtää punaisena. Osumakohdan tausta
(esim. L ARM) muuttuu punaiseksi jos se vuotaa. Mitä kirkkaampi punainen,
sitä pahempi vuoto. Sitoaksesi haavan paina 'tie wounds' (oletuksena H).

POISSA. Ainoat tavat lopettaa tehtävä ovat onnistuminen, epäonnistuminen
tai kuolema. Keskeyttäminen ei ole mahdollista.

Lopettaaksesi tehtävän pelaajan on mentävä lopetuspisteeseen (end point,
näkyy F5-näytössä). Tiedät olevasi oikeassa paikassa kun XY oikeassa
laidassa syttyy. Lopetuspaikka on yleensä sama kuin aloituspaikka. Kaikki
tehtävän tavoitteet pitää saavuttaa jos haluaa lopettaa tehtävän
menestyksellisesti.

3.4 Ohjeita

- Muista näkökenttä (Field Of Vision). Vaikka et näekään ketään joku voi olla
siellä. Voit ehkä nähdä punaisen neliön mustalla alueella. Tämä merkitsee
sitä että joku on siinä suunnassa.
- Käännä päätäsi kun liikut. Näkökenttä on normaalisti 180 astetta (juostessa
Sinua on vaikeampi havaita
kun pidät matalaa profiilia. Ryömiminen (prone) on myös hyvä, mutta se
on melko hidasta ja kuluttaa paljon kestokykyä (stamina).
- Pidä kestokyky (stamina) korkealla. Vihreällä oleva stamina on hyvä,
  rekyyli, palautuminen vie paljon aikaa.

2. MEN

Use Prev and Next buttons on the left to select character you want to modify.
Click right button on left top corner to center the character if it's in the
map. Clicking on the Z with left button goes upper level on the map, right
lower level.

2.1 When left-top corner reads 'player'

In this screen you edit player's mission details.

Select mission type with arrow buttons. Go to next or previous mission
 objective with upper buttons.

 Mission types:
 - Escort person: Select the person you want to escort by scrolling the list.
Then make sure that 'Place' is highlighted. Click on the map to select the
place you want to escort the person.
 - Prevent person from going: Select the person you want to stop by scrolling
the list. 'Place' must be highlighted. Click on the map to select the place
where the person shouldn't go. Make sure that the person IS GOING TO THAT

   that must be destroyed.
 * Destroy all these places: You can select the block from the list or by
selecting 'Place' and clicking on the map.
 * Bring item to point: Select item group first from the list. Then scroll
the upper list to correct item. Make sure that player can have this item.
If you use items after the '-' sign make sure the item is in the ground,
since they are not available in the mission briefing. In this case use
first 'take item from' with the same item, it clears the picture to player.
Make sure 'place' is highlighted and then click on the point where the
   item should be taken.
 * Take item from: Select item group first from the lower list. Then scroll
the upper list to correct item. Make sure this item exists and is on the
map (from the Item submenu). Make sure 'place' is highlighted and then
click on the point where the item should be taken from.
 * Patrol in: Make sure 'Place' is highlighted and click on the map.
 * Patrol unnoticed in: Same procedure as in 'patrol in', but in this mission
type NOBODY must detect the player, otherwise the mission is failed. Can't
be used with 'escort person' mission type.

The characters will have a random starting point in missions which are
 marked with an asterisk (*).

Begin/End Buttons
Highlight Begin and click on the map to select player's begin point, and
End to select player's exit point.

Right-clicking on Place/Begin/End buttons centers that point to map screen.

Max civil casualties
This is the maximum amount of civil casualties that can be occured in this
mission. If this value is exceeded the mission is failed.

Short description

 Waypoint types:
  - Move
  - Move fast: Runs from this waypoint to next one
  - Force move: Moves from this waypoint to next one, no matter what happens
  - Guard: Guard on this place for a while
  - Force guard: Guard on this place no matter what happens.
  - Follow player: Character follows player when he is close enough.
  - Drop weapon: Character drops his current weapon. NOTE: This command is
executed right after the previous waypoint, so if you want person to drop
weapon, FIRST put 'move' waypoint to where you want the dropping, SECOND
put 'drop weapon' and THIRD put 'move' near the drop waypoint. If you put
the third one too far the character will drop weapons all the way to the
    waypoint.
  - Wait for someone: Character doesn't move until he detects someone
  - Wait for: Character waits for determined time. The time IS NOT absolute,
it's only about-measure how long the break is. NOTE: this waypoint is
executed right after the previous waypoint, so if you want character to
wait in some point, FIRST put the 'move' waypoint where you want him to
go, and the NEXT waypoint should be 'wait'
  - Fire at will: Character is hostile towards player
  - Hold fire: Character will not fire towards player until he is shot by
    player
  - Loop to wp: Select waypoint from +- display. Character goes to waypoint
you select here and continues the loop from there.

It is recommended that you use 'Loop to WP' command that the characters
continue their moving even the mission would last for a long time. For
example make a guarding character to move around a building, and then
loop the waypoint so that he goes around the building in continous loop.

Placing items:
Select first right item group (by color: weapon, ammo, helmet, shield,
miscellaneous) and then the right item from arrows (right button goes 10
items with one click). Then place the item to the map.

Remember that items will not show during the game if they are 'under' the
block they are in. For example, a tall object such as a table hides the
items on the same coordinates.

5. INSTRUCTIONS

5.1 Building
- Leave enough space for important areas
- Corridors should be 3 blocks wide
- Leave space between trees and bushes so that characters may move freely
  between them
- Create more than one entrance to each building, that gives player a lot
more opportunities to choose his route
- Try to make buildings real-like. Get ideas from real life

5.2 Characters
- Make enough characters for each mission, remember bypassers and policemen.
- It's better to make few good enemies than ten bad ones.
- Make characters move around. In most missions they begin from random
  waypoint.
- Place waypoints far enough from each others. A few blocks should be enough.
It takes some time for the character to orientate into right direction.
- Equip enemies with realistic equipment. Mafia men probably won't have
automatic rifles, helmets and rigid armors. Army units in China probably
don't use M-16 rifles. And so on.

5.3 Items
- Try to put some items on each mission. First aid kits to cupboards.
  Toolkits to garage.
- Don't put many weapons to the scenery, unless it is a weapon cache. Don't
make it too easy for the player.
- If you put mines on the scenery, hide them 'under' the blocks. Bushes or
  crates hide them just fine
- Remember that grenades and demolition packs begin their countdown when the
mission begins, so they explode a moment after that.

5.4 Availability
- Try to set the availability realistically. If the mission is in Africa the
availability level is a lot lower than in USA
- Don't give player too much money
- Disable some better weapons and make player choose between some more
  adequate weapons

6. SEND YOUR MISSIONS TO ME

If you think you have created a great mission, send it to me! But first:

- Play the mission by yourself. Check that everything works just as you
  planned.
- Run Check! Look if everything is right, and repair those parts which need
some adjustment. Remember that all notes are not errors, e.g. a person
might be 'inside' a block (in a chair).
- Test for different possibilities, and if a failure is possible in the
mission (for example, 'prevent person from going'), check that it works too
- Make a good mission description to the description field
- Be sure that you include both <mission>.001 and <mission>.002 files. If
you've made a campaing, make sure you include the <campaign>.003 file.

I reserve the right to alter the mission if it seems necessary. If it passes
the quality check it will be distributed in the mission webpage.

Send your mission to address:
j.nyman@pp.****.fi
