README

Death Rally for Windows

Thank You for downloading Death Rally for Windows!

Death Rally was originally developed by Remedy in 1995-1996 and published
by Apogee Software. The game was both a labor of love and the first game
Remedy shipped, on September 6, 1996.

The game's reception exceeded all our expectations, staying as #1 on the
most popular gaming site of the time, Happy Puppy, for 13 weeks in a row and
receiving numerous praises from gaming press.

"Death Rally is the kind of game that keeps you up all night. It is
simply very, very fun, and add to that gorgeous graphics and
stylistic music and you come as close as possible to the perfect
	racing game."

-- Computer Gaming Online Rated 5 out of 5 Stars.

"Death Rally is arcade racing at its most addictive. Control is
intuitive and smooth. Where Death Rally really excels is in the
	small details."

	-- PC Gaming

The old DOS version has been a bit tricky to get to run on modern PCs,
requiring emulation software and other trickery, so now 13 years after the
original release, we're happy to share the game again with everyone! We hope
you'll still find the experience enjoyable or at least nostalgic. A big
Thank You from the entire Remedy crew to all the gamers out there!

How To Play
-----------

Death In the Fast Lane. Enter the corrupt racing world of Death Rally, where
defensive driving means annihilating your opponents. You'll become ravenous
for the power and glory that comes with being the best at Death Rally, but
first you must pay your dues. Put the pedal to the metal and smash, blast
and obliterate the competition, to earn the chance to face the undefeated
master, "The Adversary." Win Races, make deals with loan sharks and mob
bosses to get the cash you need to build the ultimate battle racing machine.
Remember, no trick is too dirty in your savage quest for the checkered flag.
And keep the pedal to the metal!

Controls: Default controls are: Arrow keys for throttle, breaking and
steering. Left Shift for turbo boost, Control key to shoot and left ALT key
for mines. Space to honk the horn. These can be configured from the menu.

System Requirements and Compatibility
-------------------------------------

Operating System: Windows XP SP3 is the minimum requirement. Windows Vista
and Windows 7 both work as well, in 32-bit and 64-bit configurations. The
game may work on older Windows versions but it has not been tested.

Hardware: Death Rally for Windows is a light-weight game, and should run well
with different hardware configurations and PCs. If your PC runs any other
games you should be OK. It has been tested to run e.g. on Intel Atom-based
netbooks. Sound card and OpenGL support are recommended, but neither is
absolutely required.

Gamepad support: Death Rally for Windows supports one stick control and
4 buttons. The gamepad needs to be plugged in before launching the game.

Multiplayer: Unfortunately one of the best aspects of Death Rally,
multiplayer, is not available in this release. It was built for the modem and
IPX network era, and would have needed a full rewrite. That was sadly out of
the scope on what we could do with this free release.

Command Line Options
--------------------

Death Rally can be started with the following command line options (to add
them, right click the Death Rally Icon, select Properties and add the
command line as the last entry on the Target line.

-nogl By default the game uses OpenGL output in desktop resolution.
This option disables OpenGL and uses the software renderer.
Use if you have compatibility problems and/or don't have
OpenGL drivers for your graphics card, or in rare cases
encounter performance issues (e.g. you have a very large
desktop resolution and very slow graphics card).

-window Starts the game in windowed mode. Alt+Enter toggles between
		full screen and windowed mode.

-smooth Enables bilinear filtering for the race mode (off by default).
F12 can be used to toggle filtering on/off.

-nosound	Disables music and sound effects.
