____________________________________________________________________________ DUFF infofile (registered version) ------------- Copyright 1995,1996 by inTech. Copyright 1995,1996 by Pepe Taskinen and Jetro Lauha. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Table of contents 1.0 Description 2.0 Starting Duff 3.0 Troubleshooting 4.0 Playing the Game 5.0 Requirements 6.0 Copyright License and Disclaimer 7.0 Level Editor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.0 Description Duff is an arcade game which has both action and strategy features. It features also 256-colour VGA graphics. There is 16 standard levels but you can have thousands of levels in custom level packets. This is the Shareware Version - please give copies of it to all your friends. Register now and you will receive a registration keyfile and a cool level editor and level packer. With those you can create levels and level packets yourself and use them in the game under Custom Levels -menu. Registration costs very little - look at DUFFREG.TXT which contains the registration form, fill it and choose a registration method and follow the directions in that file. (DUFFREG.FIN has special registration offer for Finns.) We don't take responsibility if the diskette containing registered version is broken (if using normal registration). The low-cost registration is meant only for private persons. If you want some other way of registration, contact us. If you enjoy playing Duff, please register now and support the shareware concept. InTech Developers ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.0 Starting Duff To start Duff: 1. Change to the drive and subdirectory where the game is installed 2. If you are playing first time, type DUFFSET first and choose the soundcard (only Gravis UltraSound is supported now). 3. Type DUFF ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.0 Troubleshooting * If the graphics appear to be either too dark or too light, just adjust the settings on your monitor. * If the game runs slowly on your computer.. 1. Try to switch off the music and sound. This can help a much at least if you are using Sound Blaster. On Gravis UltraSound this shouldn't affect the speed much but you can always try it. 2. Buy a faster computer (and/or graphics adapter). * If you experience the game accessing hard disk while playing (and jerking because of that), you should turn write-cache off from your disk cache program (for example, if you use smartdrv, type SMARTDRV /X before you play). Although turning off write-cache can make the loading pauses longer. * If you are running Duff under Microsoft Windows and experience problems, try to run Duff from DOS without Windows in the background. * If the game just doesn't work.. 1. Try to increase the amount of base memory 2. If you are using Sound Blaster be sure to have enough EMS-memory available. 3. Have at least 250k (or more) free space on your hard disk for swapping 4. Try to get a new copy of Duff from a reputable source and try again. * If you still have some problems, you can write to our Internet E-mail address (tonic@triplex.fipnet.fi) - Try to give as much information as possible about your computer and the reactions of the game. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.0 Playing the Game The object of the game is to collect needed amount of skulls in each level and proceed to the exit before time runs out. You have to avoid dangers like spinning blades and dropping rocks or skulls. When you pick up some other obstacles, you'll usually receive some points. Every time when you have gathered little more than 2500 points you receive an extra life. There is no saving feature in the game but if you get really bored on playing the first levels again and again, you can start the game directly at some level by typing "level ???" as the parameter (put the number of level you wish to ???). For example, if you start the game like this: "DUFF LEVEL 10" you'll start immediately in the level 10. Warning! Do not enter bigger number than there are levels since it may crash the game or do some other unexpected things! The keys are : Left Arrow - Move to left Right Arrow - Move to right Up Arrow - Move to up Down Arrow - Move to down Space - Drop a bomb if you have one Ctrl - Hold down and press arrow key at the same time to "eat" a block. Backspace - Kill the guy Esc - Quit the game ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0 Requirements * Standard 100% VGA compatible graphics adapter * About 250k free disk space for swapping * Requires at least 386 - 486dx recommended * Some base memory :) * Gravis UltraSound highly recommended for music and sound ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.0 Copyright License and Disclaimer This material is not freeware. First you must choose background. After that you can put items to the level with left mouse button, and you can change item/action with right mouse button. Remember to make sure that all required items are present in level before the level is used. You can create level packs (which the game uses) with DUFFMAKE.EXE after producing some levels. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
