³ The game ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

Miniwar requires at least an 386 processor with math coprocessor and about
460 kb of conventional memory.
A pentium processor is strongly recommended.
To enjoy the sounds and musics you need in addition a Sound Blaster and about
2Mb of free XMS.

For more information about the musics see the chapter about sound and music.

The installation is simple. Just unzip the zip file, that you with the -d
switch. It will create a subdirectory called LEVELS. It contains the .PCX
level files. For more information on levels see the chapter about levels.
After extracting just execute MINIWAR.EXE and you are in the game. The menu
couldn't be simpler to use: Select an option by pressing enter while it is
highlighted by the blinking cursor. There are six different options
available:

PLAY: Start the game with the current settings
PLAYERS: Select the number of players by pressing a key beteween 2 and 4 and
change the key configurations by pressing alt+1-5
WEAPON: An overview of the different weapons and their icons
LEVELS: Select a number of random levels by pressing a key beteween 0 and 9
or by pressing ALT and a key beteween 0 and 9
INFO: Some Information about the program.
EXIT: Exits to operating system

ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
³ Sounds ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

Miniwar supports, at least now, only the Sound Blaster standard. You need to
have an original Creative Labs Sound Blaster or a 100% compatible sound card
and 2 Mb of free XMS memory to enjoy the sounds and musics of Miniwar.

IMPORTANT:
Miniwar v1.26 supports adding new music files. New musics can be downloaded
from the Miniwar homepage (address see below).
If you don't hear in game music but you hear sounds, then you have
downloaded a non-music version of miniwar. That means the ZIP file didn't
include music (and was faster to download). If you want some cool music you
can download it from the homepage.

To install an additional music just do the following:
-unzip the zipped file
-copy the bgXXX.raw file to the \DATA subdirectory of miniwar
-delete the zip file if you want to

ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
³ Command Line ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

Miniwar supports some command line options. They are:
  -? Help overview
-dx Add a delay. Use this if the game runs too fast. A greater delay
         means a slower game speed
-s Play the game without sounds (use this if you don't have a sound
card, or if it doesn't work)
-m Play the game without background musics (useful if you want to play
         CDs in background)

ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
³ Key configurations ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

You can change the key configurations in the players menu by pressing
alt+1-5. Note that player 2 has got two different controls. The first one is
used in two player games and the other one is used in three or four player
games. This allows you to use more keyboard space with less players, so that
your fingers don't fall off that soon. Of course these two controls can
consist of the same configuration.

Some buttons are named "SC-XX", where XX is the buttons keyboard scancode.
These buttons work as well as the others, so don't be confused.

If you want to reset the controls to default, you just have to overwrite the
KEYS.CFG file with the KEYS.DEF file. These defaults are listed here too:

PLAYER 1:
Left: left arrow
Right: right arrow

ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
³ Making levels ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

!! NOTE:
!! Miniwar v1.25 and 1.26 use a different palette than version 1.20 so
!! levels made for Miniwar 1.20 don't work correctly anymore.

All levels of Miniwar have to be in the LEVELS subdirectory. They have to be
in the 320x200x256 PCX format. Special palette indexes:
0: The background color.
8: Pixels in this color are undestroyable. There is a nine pixel wide
border in this color around every level.
224: This color marks platforms.
230: This color index is black, but troopers can't jump through it. Use
this color to make spaces, where you can't climb inside.

More on platforms:
If you want to include a platform that moves up and down do the following:
Put one pixel of the color 224 there, where you want the platform to have its
highest point. The platform will automatically find its lowest point.
NOTE: There can be only up to 10 platforms in one level. More platforms
      won't work.

If you want to make your own levels I would recommend to load BLANK.PCX a
graphic editor. After making a level save it with another name into the
LEVELS subdirectory. Note that there will be drawn a nine pixel wide
undestroyable (color 8) border around your level when its used in the game.
BLANK.PCX already contains this border. For more levels see the Miniwar
homepage.
