1. Introduction

Hell is no place for a snowman - but some days are worse
than others.
You start a desperate journey through the perils of evil
and treachery. Listening to the voice of a murdered man
inside your head, you begin to realize that your fortune
is bound to the souls burning in the eternal flames.

Snowman in Hell is a game of both hectic platform action
and sophisticated puzzles. It’s also an epic horror
story about a snowman with nothing to lose, inspired by
Dante’s Inferno.

Snowman in Hell features unexpected style combinations,
graphics & animation made of clay and garbage,
para-realistic simulation of physics, and a delicately
grotesque soundscape, creating an intellectual, yet
brutal gaming experience for people with no sense of
humour.

2. Recommended Minimum System Configuration

- Microsoft Windows operating system
- True color display with 1024x768 screen resolution
- 512 MB RAM

5. How to Play

Use the keys described below to move around in the game.
Use the mouse to navigate through the main menu.

<LEFT> Move left
<RIGHT> Move right
<UP> Jump
<DOWN> Pick up / Drop
<SPACE> Kick / Throw / Skip cutscenes
<G> Get snow from the tortured snowmen
<Q> Quit the game

6. Tips & Tricks

– Keep pushing the < UP > key down to jump higher. Jump
while you’re running to leap farther.
– Avoid all the hot stuff, it makes you melt, and
eventually die.
– Try using your head as a weapon – kick or throw it at
monsters and obstacles.
– Your head is not the only object you can kick or pick
up – experiment!
– Try to reach the gate that is located on the far end
of each level. But don’t forget your head!
– To get snow into your body as well as your head, hit
< G > while jumping over a tortured snowman.
– If you get stuck, pay attention to Vergilius (the guy
hanging around inside your head) – he sometimes has an
idea on how to get forward.

7. Project Background

The Snowman in Hell project was started during the
course “Creating Narration for 2D Games” in 2003 at the
Universty of Art and Design Helsinki by four Media Lab
students: Miikka Junnila, Janne Kaasalainen, Miska
Natunen and Jürgen Scheible. The project was further
developed in the context of the Interactive Audiovisual
Narration Production Period of 2004. At this time the
group was also reinforced with Tanja Bastamow, a new
member from the School of Motion Picture, Television and
Production Design. As of the fall of 2004, the work with
the project still continues to support its authors'
professional and artistic interests as well as the sheer
delight of creating and experimenting.
