THE TROOPER: Action Game of the Crimean War
                  -------------------------------------------
                        New WATCOM-ported version 6.66

                              Written by Cadaver

--------------------------------
SECTION ONE: BORING SYSTEM STUFF
--------------------------------

MACHINE REQUIREMENTS
--------------------
To get the program running, you'll need at least a 386SX + VGA graphics. To
enjoy playing, you should have at least a 386/33.

MEMORY REQUIREMENTS
-------------------
About 2MB of free memory (conventional/extended/expanded/DPMI) is needed.

SOUND SUPPORT
-------------
The Trooper autodetects the soundcard using enviroment variables, and uses the
JUDAS Apocalyptic Softwaremixing Soundsystem. Soundcards supported are:
GUS (at least Classic & MAX work), SB, SBPRO, SB16.

SOUND PROBLEMS
--------------
If you have problems, try first running the soundcard's initialization program
again. An anarchist program could have left the soundcard in some weird state.
Check also the soundcard enviroment variables. Running sound under Windows
depends on the soundcard drivers, some may not allow it (may cause a crash,
lockup or a general protection fault.) To force NOSOUND mode, type TROOPER -N.

--------------------
SECTION TWO: PLAYING
--------------------

Use arrow keys to move in the menus and SPACE/ENTER to make selections.

In the game, use arrow keys LEFT & RIGHT to ride left/right, UP arrow key to
jump, DOWN arrow to jump down from a platform and SPACE to swing the sword. Use
the sword to kill the russian soldiers before they kill you.

There are many kinds of enemies:
INFANTRYMEN - these carry muskets and run around without much sense. They
always stop to aim before they shoot.
MORTAR MEN - if possible, don't go near these, 'cos they'll fire the mortar
               without any warning.
OFFICERS - these wear a grey uniform and are armed with a pistol. They fire
               much and without warning.
TROOPERS - enemy horsemen try to run you thru with their swords. Attack
only from behind, beneath or above!

When you kill the enemies, you may come across a variety of powerups. These are:
SHIELD - invulnerability for 10 seconds
FLAMESWORD - your sword will shoot fireballs for 10 seconds
KILL - all enemies on screen die
EXTRA MAN - guess!

Extra men are also awarded at 10000 points intervals.

To complete a level, kill enemies until the meter at the bottom is full and the
message "KILLED ENOUGH. HEAD FOR EXIT" flashes. Then run to the far right of
the level. There are three levels:

THE PLAINS
THE MOUNTAINS (you'll have to discover the route to the exit!)
THE VILLAGE

After these you'll start over from the first level. This time it'll be harder
though...

There is also a hidden cheat mode...

-------------------------
SECTION THREE: OTHER INFO
-------------------------

This game was written in C & Assembler during summer 1996 and is blasphemy-
ware. WATCOM port made in November 1997. Norwegen!

If you want music, copy any up to 16-channel XM to the TROOPER directory with
the name TROOPER.XM.
