                             1. The game
                             -----------

The idea of Wings is very simple. You fly a little rocket
(or whatever it is) in various levels trying to shoot your
opponents down. It's fun, though. ;)

If you have ever played a game named AUTS, Wings might look
more than little familiar. For example, those ingenious
(aren't they?;) V-model ships are taken from there.

At the beginning you may choose 1-8 levels, 1-8 players,
and ships and weapons for each player. The weapon marked with
1 will be on when a match begins (if starting weapon option
is set to 'default'), and weapons marked with X can be changed
on later. After that, you can change your weapon at a base,
by pressing buttons that are normally used for turning left/right.

When there is only one player left, he must return to a base
to win the match. Bases are usually gray objects, but there
are also private bases, which are drawn by the same color
as your ship. Ships are also repaired on most bases.

From Options/Rules -menu, you can select deathmatch-mode,
in which killed players are reborn, and killer gets a point.
If player crashes himself, he will lose a point. Levels
are changed after selected amount of kills.

There is also a simple one player game included. If you
select only one player, you must rescue ten of your own
troopers from an enemy territory, and then fly to a base.

Now, what are you waiting for? Try it out and have fun!

                            2. Installing
                            -------------

When you unpack WINGS140.ZIP you must also create the directory
structure from the packet. With pkunzip, you can use command:

pkunzip -d wings140.zip

                            3. Requirements
                            ---------------

386 PC
VGA display
About 4MB RAM

Recommended:
Pentium
16MB RAM
SoundBlaster 2.0 or compatible

With music on, you should have at least about 5MB free memory,
or the game may crash. SB setup is read from BLASTER environment
variable. If sounds won't work, check that it is set correctly.
If you want to disable sounds for some reason, you can start the
game with switch -S0.

If the game runs too slowly with your computer, try setting the
parallax option off, reducing water speed etc. The game works
fine with 486/80Mhz, and at least 486/66 should be fast enough.

If the game is too fast, or you wish to see how fast your
computer can run it, you can change the maximum speed of
the game from <Options/Detail/Framerate>. As default it
is set to 50fps.

                              4. Controls
                              -----------

1 - 3 Player game:

                  Player 1 Player 2 Player 3

Thrust Up w i
Turn left Left a j
Turn right Right d l
Shoot normal gun R. shift Tab b
Shoot 2. weapon Down s k

4 Player game:

                   Player 1 Player 2 Player 3 Player 4

Thrust 8 w u
Turn left 4 a h
Turn right 6 d k '
Shoot normal gun Ins Tab b Alt
Shoot 2. weapon 5 s j

Those are default settings, and can be changed with the keysetup
program.

ESC: pause/quit
F1: pause
F2: show framerate
F12: save screen to a picture. (screen.pcx)

                        5. Modem/serial game
                        --------------------

Many problems with modem game have been reported, so don't be
surprised if it does not work. I have considered removing
the whole thing, but decided to let it stay. Perhaps someone
even uses it.

If the game crashes often, you should try setting sounds off
or to low quality, because they seem to disturb transmissions
somewhat. (Bug? I don't know). This might not happen with fast
enough computers (P166?).

Settings:

First choose right COM port from <Remote/Serial/Port> or
<Remote/Modem/Config/Port>. Both players must also use
same <Speed>.

Connecting:

In serial game, both players must choose <Remote/Serial/Connect>.
After that, connecting will take about 5 seconds.

In modem game, one player must choose <Remote/Modem/Answer>,
and then wait for a call. The other can dial with <Remote/
Modem/Dial> (+ correct phone number).

Playing:

When you have connected you will see a simple screen, in which
you can chat with the remote player. (Press ESC to get back
to the menu).

Then you have to decide which one of the players will set
all options of the game. (Important: set correct players
to 'remote'). Options can be easily sent to the other
computer: one player selects <Send options> and the
other <Receive options>. (You will see those when you
have connected). When both are ready, sending will take
few seconds.

If there are more than 4 players (or for some other reason),
you should choose which players are shown in the screen from
'Show screen' option in <Players> menu.

When settings are ready, both players must select <Start game>.

In modem/serial game you cannot pause the game with ESC.
Instead, it will get both players back to the main menu.

You should end serial game with <Disconnect> and modem game
with <Hang up>.

At first you should perhaps try this with low speed, no sounds,
and simple 2 player game.

                              6. Music
                              --------

You can't stand those musics? Well, those are on \MUSIC
directory, easy to delete. ;) Of course, you can put your
favorite ones there instead (in MOD or S3M format).

In MENU_M.CFG there is a list of musics which are used
in the menu. Edit it if you want to change them. If the
list is empty or incorrect all musics are used.

You can change the music directory by editing DIRS.CFG.

                      7. Building your own levels
                      ---------------------------

For a level you need one or two pictures in PCX-format (256 colors).
The size of the level picture is free, but it must be at least
157*90. The size of the background picture depends on the level:

width = level_width / 2 + 78
height = level_height / 2 + 45

For example: level (400*600), background (278*345).

Palette is loaded from the level picture, except 48 first colors,
which cannot be changed. If you use those colors, you should take
the correct palette from COLORS.PCX. Palette must be same in both
pictures.

See COLORS.PCX/COLORS.TXT for more information about palette and
special colors.

Then you just run MAKELEV.EXE, give names, answer questions,
and that's all. If you choose not to use default settings,
you'll have to give some percentages about how often it, for
example, rains on your level.

If pictures are bigger than needed, they will be cut to the
right size.

Levels must be placed on directory WINGS\LEV, or its subdirectories.
(For example: wings\lev\my\best). You can also change the directory
by editing DIRS.CFG.

                         8. Converting levels
                         --------------------

If you have some AUTS levels, which you would like to play in
Wings, you can convert them with LEVCONV.EXE.

Run the program, and give the name and directory of those
level(s) you want to convert. (for example: c:\games\auts\*.lev)
Then you choose if you want to change some settings of the
level (rain probability etc.), and give the directory where you
want to place the converted level(s).

                             9. Notices
