Netherworld is a great arcade style shooter that was first released on the Commodore 64 way back in 1988. This is scrolling shoot em up action at its very best, but for some reason it is not held in as high regard as many of the other classic Commodore 64 shooters. Netherworld is a game that is very easy to track down and it is a game that I will say right away needs to be in any shooter fans collection.

Design

The presentation of this game is just amazing. The world that has been created here is really spectacular. The idea of the game is that you have been transported into a freaky looking world. A world that is very different from the one that you know. It's kind of like a purgatory world and the art design here is just amazing. The areas that you will be flying in all have a ton of little details in them. I in particular love the various statues and monoliths that are scattered around. These really do make it seem that the Netherworld has been home to many ancient races.

As well as looking amazing one of the things that I really love about Netherworld is the blood pumping music. This game just has an incredible score. It still to this day amazes me the tremendous tunes that programmers were able to get out of the Commodore 64. The guy who scored this game is the Commodore 64 legend that is Jori Olkkonen.

Gameplay

Now what makes Netherworld such an under rated gem in the Commodore 64 library is its very interesting game play. I know that I said the game is a shoot em up, but really saying just that is doing this game a huge disservice. You see this is a shooter, but it also has many different puzzle aspects to the game as well. It manages to have both mindless shooting action, but it also will make your brain work as well. This makes for a very interesting shooter. Off the top of my head I cannot think of another game that is like Netherworld.

The 12 levels will see you needing to watch where you are flying as there are many obstacles and walls that you can slam your spacecraft into. As well as watching where you are flying you of course will have to pump a whole bunch of cool looking aliens away with your space craft's cannons. Most games in the shooter genre would stop there, but not Netherworld. You see shooting aliens is only just one part of what you have to do. There are many occasions where you will need to move rocks n order to get to a new area. And as well as this you need to collect diamonds as well. There is a ton to do here and to make things even more tense you have a time limit as well.

Netherworld is quite a tough game, but it is more than fair. The game has some very smooth controls that can take a few minutes to get the hang of them, but once you do you will feel like Han Solo flying the Millennium Falcon. This is a great game and if you want a shooter that offers something a little more than just shooting stuff then this is a game you simply must track down.
