Adventure games have always been the pinnacle of gaming, because through them gamers have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in a massive, interesting world filled with quests, drama, adventure and all that interesting stuff. Some adventure games however stood the test of the time, and The Secret of Monkey Island is definitely one of them.

Gameplay

This game was released in 1990 and it feature a classic point and click interface. The action of The Secret of Monkey Island is set during the age of piracy, however we get to play in a fantasy version or the Caribbean rather than a real one, something that’s quite interesting to say the least. The Secret of Monkey Island allows you to play the role of a young man that’s named Guybrush Threepwood whose main goal is to become a pirate and solve puzzles, while also exploring the vastness or the Carribean setting.

Guybrush fights with a pirate

The Secret of Monkey Island’s gameplay is rather intuitive, since you get to point at the desired character and talk to it, or you can click on items and grab them into your inventory. Overall, the title is played from a third person perspective. You do get the opportunity to interact with the environment via around 12 different verb commands that you can use whenever you want.

Solving puzzles in The Secret of Monkey Island is easy, but the main problem for many people is that some of the puzzles are very hard to figure out, especially during the first playthrough. Still, The Secret of Monkey Island is a blast to play because the puzzles fit so well with the overall story and thus you feel like a part of this virtual world.

Another important thing to know about The Secret of Monkey Island is that this was one of the first games to create a dialog tree that contained multiple lines which you could use while talking with other characters. The Secret of Monkey Island is also filled with numerous cutscenes that successfully manage to make the story even more interesting and diverse, which is quite impressive to say the least.

What makes the game stand out however is the way these functions blend together in forming a large, fun and believable game world where just about everything is possible. The characters are believable, easy to interact with and you can easily relate to them, something that’s astonishing to say the least.

This game is one of the most important adventure classics that you can play right now, and if you go through it you will get a glimpse at the fun yet highly dangerous world of piracy. The Secret of Monkey Island got a re-release back in 2009, but the original game released in 1990 still remains an iconic, essential adventure game that any gamer needs to play right away! We recommend you to check it out, it’s one of the best and most interesting games that you can play!
