When you think about the first FPS titles with 3D graphics, then the first titles that come to mind are definitely Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. And while the first one tackles with the idea of exploring an unknown moonbase in search of life and answers, Duke Nukem 3D comes with a more action packed approach.

Gameplay

In Duke Nukem 3D, you play the role of Duke Nukem which needs to defeat the alien invasion that has attacked Earth. One of the major things that makes Duke Nukem 3D stand out is the stunning level design and the humor filled lines that the Duke has as you explore the levels. No matter if he encounter aliens or kills them, he will always say comedic, funny lines that you will certainly enjoy.

Duke Nukem 3D also has numerous other interesting things. For example, you can destroy most of the props that can be found within the game, something that makes the title very fun, as you can tailor the experience to your own needs and aspirations.

You have numerous weapons in the game, with some of the best being the chain gun, shotgun, pistol and the rocket propelled rocket launcher. If you get the Atomic version of the game you can play with the expander, which is a devastating weapon specifically suitable for those of us hell bent on destruction!

All levels in Duke Nukem 3D are filled with interaction opportunities, as they are far from being linear. On top of that, the enemies are quite interesting, and with a few bosses added in the game for good measure, you can immediately realize that you are in for a treat as you play.

You can use steroids to speed up Duke’s movement, and you can also use the medkits that can be found in the game world to heal duke as well. As you play you will even have the opportunity to use some interesting night vision goggles that will make the whole experience a lot more interesting and unique as well.

Alongside the aliens you will also fight the mutated humans, and if you take into consideration that they have numerous types of equipment and weapons then you will immediately realize that you are in for a treat. You do encounter some enemies with jetpacks, but not all of them are that easy to defeat, so even these fights can be quite challenging too!

Pretty much like Doom, Duke Nukem 3D also brings a multiplayer mode where you can play either in cooperative mode or engage in a deathmatch if you want. Both game modes are action packed and even nowadays you can find numerous players online, something that is really cool to say the least.

In conclusion, Duke Nukem 3D is one of the best shooters that have appeared in the last 20-30 years. Duke Nukem on its own has become an iconic character, and many people nowadays still admire him as being the action hero of the century! With numerous levels to explore, humor and an explosive gameplay, Duke Nukem 3D is a true classic that shows us the evolution of the gaming world!
