Uuno Turhapuro muuttaa maalle
|Uuno Turhapuro muuttaa maalle|
Multiplayer (2 players in turns)
Uuno Turhapuro muuttaa maalle (Uuno Turhapuro Moves to the Country) is one of the most interesting games that was released on the Commodore 64 back in the 1980's. First of all it was the first licensed video game based on a Finnish movie, and it was also the first commercially successful game in Finland, so it does have a very quirky and special place in video game history.
Movie license game that was typical for the era
Uuno Turhapuro muuttaa maalle was published in 1986. It was based on a movie by the same name, where Uuno Turhapuro – played by Vesa-Matti Loiri – has been gone for a week to salvage his marriage. Upon returning home, he finds a surly message in the fridge of his empty house, after which he leaves with his friends Härski Hartikainen and Sörsselssön to do emergency service work in the countryside.
The game at its heart is a side scrolling platform game. This was the trend for the majority of licenses that were released during the 80's and 90's. The player has to move the character vertically, trying to avoid oncoming obstacles. The levels take you steadily forward, and although the views change, the way the game is played stays the same from the beginning to the end. The goal is to beat the three levels that are based on the movie, and collect enough money to buy a mansion.
In the first level the player is pulled behind a car on a plow, in the second he has to waterski without the skis, and in the final one the player runs around in a forest.
The player has four lives, which you can lose by hitting obstacles or as you run out of energy. You have to take turns when played as a multiplayer game. Pressing the function key opens the setting where you can change the level of difficulty, among other things. The game is very challenging even when played on the lowest difficulty setting, and the player has to be accurate and have fast reaction skills, as well as have a lot of good luck on his side.
In all Uuno Turhapuro muuttaa maalle is a really decent movie tie in game. It has a special 80's charm to it that makes it one of the more under rated games in the Commodore 64 library.
Development of the game
People at Amersoft had been throwing around ideas on developing an Uuno Turhapuro game, but it wasn’t until Petter Kinnunen joined the team that they started carrying out their plans. Kinnunen had found out about a new Turhapuro movie, contacted Spede, and worked on the deal with Simo Salminen. The details were okayed by Spede.
Pasi Hytönen was chosen to make the game as he’d sent an earlier platform game to Amersoft, which was never published, but it worked as a sample for what he’s capable of. Hytönen signed a deal with Amersoft, and they gave him a couple of months to make the Uuno game so it would be published right in time before Christmas. Jori Olkkonen arranged the theme music from the movie – composed by Jaakko Salo – for the game. Teosto (Finnish Composers’ Copyright Society) gave permission for the theme music to be played in the beginning of the game for one minute.
Petter Kinnunen and Pasi Hytönen tested the game themselves. There were 2000 copies of the game made, out of which the majority were cassette versions; disk versions numbered at under a 100 copies. The game sold 1600 copies before Christmas, and it was a commercial success considering the time.
Familiar Scenes from the Movie
The game follows the movie plot quite well for being published in 1986. Even though the levels are more like modified versions of the actual scenes more than direct copies, there still are familiar elements in the game. The game concept is by Petter Kinnunen, who chose the content by watching the movie three times on a VHS tape even before the movie was released.
Familiar Characters from the Movie
|Uuno Turhapuro||The protagonist of the game, Uuno Turhapuro, could be called a dead-beat for lack of a better word. He won a jackpot by marrying a beautiful rich lady, and right after the wedding he got lazy. The character can be seen in many popular movies, TV shows, and in this video game of course. Uuno Turhapuro is very similar to Al Bundy from the TV show “Married With Children”, which was also popular in the 80s.|
|The Lady in a Bikini||In the second level of the game there is a lady on the beach who’s dressed in a bikini and is seen waving her hand. She’s probably Greta, but she also bears some resemblance to Uuno’s wife Elisabeth. Only Elisabeth is sunbathing in a bikini in the original movie, but Greta is also seen in her bikini. As Uuno wakeboards, Greta - who also waves her hand like the lady in the game - drives the boat.|
|Uuno’s Father||Uuno’s Father can be seen not only at the end of the game surrounded by his moonshine pots, but also in the second level where he tries to hit Uuno with a thing that resembles a cooking pan.|
|Tuura||Uuno’s father-in-law Tuura, a very angry man, is seen in the third level.|
|Sörsselssön||In the first level, Sörsselssön is seen coming towards Uuno on his bicycle.|
|Härski Hartikainen||Härski Hartikainen appears in the third level, where he sits on a tree stump with a cigarette in his mouth.|
|The teacher||Uuno’s former teacher and his wife can be seen at the coffee table in the first level.|
