| 3. How to play                                                         |
`------------------------------------------------------------------------'

  You control your ship with five keys; thrust (move forward), turn left,
turn right, fire main gun and fire special gun. Both main and special guns
can be upgraded by picking up power-ups that appear around the level from
time to time.
  When you pick up a main gun power-up, your gun is replaced instantiously.
Your main gun also has unlimited ammo. If you pick up worse gun than you
already had, tough luck.
  Your ship also has special weapon with 2 to 16 slots; only one slot can
be active at a time. To activate another slot, you must either visit a
base and pick the slot, or pick up a "next slot"-power-up. The special
weapons have limited ammo.
  When you visit a base, your ship is also automatically repaired; this takes
time, and you are literally a sitting duck when you are being repaired.
You also must return to a base when the last enemy goes down.
  The bases may also be destroyed along with all the other terrain, but
they regenerate in time.
  The game can be paused with key F11 (and unpaused with the same key).
You can also save a screenshot by pressing key F12 (fileformat is
640x480x256 RIX and filename is KOPSSHOT.RIX). The game can be run in
windowed mode if started with parameter -c1.

.------------------------------------------------------------------------.
| 3.1 Weapons                                                            |
`------------------------------------------------------------------------'

Main weapon slots
-----------------
  The main weapon slot power-ups can be identified by looking at them;
the boxes don't have corners. Other weapons use one of the special weapon
slots Damage ratings; '+' means very little damage, 'x' is the basic unit
of damage, and 'X' means 5*x.

Weapon name.............: tuhnu
Destructive power rating: +
  This weapon is very pathetic. It's even worse than what you begin with.
Don't pick it up if any way possible; if you accidentally grab it, RUN to
grab *any* other weapon.

Weapon name.............: peagun
Destructive power rating: x
  This is what you begin with. It's pretty pathetic; to get anything done,
go grab something more powerful.

Weapon name.............: sling
Destructive power rating: x+
  Better than nothing, but worse than most. But hey, it does 50% more damage
than your original weapon, so isn't this something? Nah.

Weapon name.............: big peagun
Destructive power rating: xx
  So here's an upgrade for the old classic. The peagun mk II is a bit
outdated these days, but it comes cheap. Pretty good for home defence,
you know..

Weapon name.............: big sling
Destructive power rating: xx+
  And here's the long-awaited upgrade for the good old sling. Well, not
much better than it's cheaper brother, big peagun, but still better than
nothing.

Weapon name.............: blastgun
Destructive power rating: xxx
  The blastgun is a high-power version of the hand-held weapon; cheap
to build, but still pretty impressive in real-life situations.

Weapon name.............: mini blaster
Destructive power rating: Xxxx
  Welcome to the 90's! This toy here is the economic version of the
famous blaster series. Blaster lite, you might call it.

Weapon name.............: blaster
Destructive power rating: Xxxxx
  And here's the classical blaster itself! Have a wall you don't like?
Press the trigger a couple times and there you go!

Weapon name.............: big blaster
Destructive power rating: XX
  This is *the* most powerful thing you can jam into the main weapon
slot of your fighter. After you get one of these, you don't need much
else; just go and blast 'em away. Okay, it's pretty rare, but if you
find one, grab it at no cost.

Special weapon slot
-------------------
  The special weapon slot can handle much heavier weapons than the
main slot. Bad side is, the special weapons are not powered by your
ship's main fusion generator, and thus have limited ammo. Not all
toys you can jam there are necessarily weapons..

Weapon name.............: gas blaster
Destructive power rating: XXx
  The gas blaster is even more powerful than the big blaster, as it
uses its own power source.

Weapon name.............: mega blaster
Destructive power rating: XXxx
  The mega blaster is all the blaster family really can offer. Creating
more powerful weapons with the technology would be far too costly; the
research has to find another way to make deadlier weapons.

Weapon name.............: mine
Destructive power rating: XXXx
  The antimatter proximity mines are pretty much fun; drop few of them
into a tight spot and then chase your enemy there. When you drop them,
they take a short while to activate, but I wouldn't stand close when
they do.. They also tend to self-destruct in time in order to save in
post-war cleaning costs.

Weapon name.............: heatseeker
Destructive power rating: Xxxxx
  These 'smart' missiles always aim at the closest spot with ultra-high
temperature ratings; usually the fusion generator of the closest ship.
If you find one of these in your tail, either go around the next wall and
watch the seeker to hit the wall, or if you're close enough to another
ship, fool the seeker to follow it, instead.

Weapon name.............: morning star
Destructive power rating: Xxxx / xxxx * 64
  The morning star is a neat-looking weapon with great psychological
value. Shoot this to a wall close to couple enemies and watch them
panic. The star shoots 64 small explosive packs around it, each doing
damage on impact.

Weapon name.............: sensor jammer
Destructive power rating: +
  The sensor jammer messes up the ship's view for a while. Ever tried
to dodge a stream of blaster shots while you can't see all too well?

Weapon name.............: pyrotechnics
Destructive power rating: X / xxxx * N
  This is a pretty good tool for terraforming. Drop one in a cave and
run. After a while there should be pretty much more room than there was.
Don't let it get wet, tho..

Weapon name.............: toaster
Destructive power rating: x
  This toy shoots out bursts of liquid fire. Pretty bad for a spacecraft,
for example. Ruins the paint, if you know what I mean. Also leaves the
terrain in pretty bad shape, melting just about anything into jagged
edges. I wouldn't try to fly close to a wall after that..

Weapon name.............: rear sling
Destructive power rating: xxx
  They just keep on chasing you, don't they? What about a rapid-fire
sling, backwards? Really drops them from your tail.

Weapon name.............: ring of fire
Destructive power rating: X * 32
  Another pretty impressive looking weapon, the ring of fire. If multiple
enemies are onto you, blow one of these; a ring of 32 fireballs erupt from
your ship; if they don't dodge, well, that's their problem.

Weapon name.............: crawler
Destructive power rating: Xxxxx
  This is a slow-velocity heatseeker, launched backwards. Using this
effectively is pretty hard, but if you manage it, it's a real killer.
The joke is to spawn a swarm of these behind yourself and *then* fly
by a bunch of enemies.

Weapon name.............: gravity flow
Destructive power rating: +
  This weapon generates a wind of inverted gravity flows, effectively
pushing the target wherever you like. Okay, it takes a bit of creativity,
but it can be great fun.

Weapon name.............: bomb
Destructive power rating: XXXxxx
  Okay, there the dude is again, sitting on that base with his megablaster
ready to blow you away. Drop a couple of these at him, and the base is no
longer one of your problems.

Weapon name.............: lash
Destructive power rating: X / xxx * N
  This weapon launches a pod that drops small explosives as it flies. Looks
pretty, but takes skill to use effectively.

Weapon name.............: ultrathrust
Destructive power rating: -
  Ever needed a kick?

Weapon name.............: toxic waste
Destructive power rating: X / xxxx * N
  You're minding your own business, swimming in a pool, and then some
jerk comes and drops in a barrel of toxic waste. Don't you just hate it?

Weapon name.............: hyperspace projector
Destructive power rating: -
  This is pretty evil one. Grab a good primary weapon and project yourself
partially into hyperspace; no matter can touch you, but your gun is
synchronized with the real-space, so you can waste them. They still can hit
you, too, but you no longer have to dodge *around* that hill.. The system
still seems to have some problems with water.

Weapon name.............: plasma ball
Destructive power rating: xx * N
  This ball of super-heated gas goes through anything. And I mean *anything*.
And as long as your enemy stays in contact with it, the more she burns.
A real killer if your enemy happens to be going in the same direction.

Weapon name.............: pulse laser
Destructive power rating: xxx
  It doesn't do much to the terrain, but it's the nightmare of the repair
personnel back in the base.

Weapon name.............: delayed blast
Destructive power rating: XXXXX
  This toy creates a chain-reaction in the space-time, effectively creating
a wormhole into the center of a star. You know, HOT. Takes a while, tho.

Weapon name.............: retroboost
Destructive power rating: -
  And they *still* keep chasing you? Fly backwards and give 'em a stream
with your blaster.

Weapon name.............: flipper virus
Destructive power rating: +
  This marvel of the modern computer technology flips your enemy's video
feed upside-down. Then just watch 'em bang their heads into walls. Great
fun.

Weapon name.............: signal jammer
Destructive power rating: +
  Signal jammer brings you yet another form of pain. By focusing radiation
at the video system of your enemy's ship, his video feed gets out of sync,
causing blurred vision.

Weapon name.............: spiller
Destructive power rating: xxxx
  This is a rotative blaster weapon, pretty good for self-defence.

Weapon name.............: tuhnuruisku (originally in registered only)
Destructive power rating: +
  This is an early result of the new rapid-fire technology. The researchers
took the worst weapon they could find and developed the technology to get
it to fire VERY rapidly.

Weapon name.............: tractor beam (originally in registered only)
Destructive power rating: +
  Cm-ere! 'Nuff said.

Weapon name.............: twin laser (originally in registered only)
Destructive power rating: xxx * 2
  A pretty good offensive weapon; just fly into a swarm of enemies with
your weapons blazing. The psychological value of this weapon is also
pretty good.

Weapon name.............: super pyrotechnics (originally in registered only)
Destructive power rating: XX / XX * N
  Happen to have a mountain that annoys you?

Weapon name.............: hyper blaster (originally in registered only)
Destructive power rating: Xxxxx
  This is the latest thing out of the research labs in the lines of
rapid-fire technology. Literally death in a package. Too bad it's so
rare. Only known defence against it is to flee.

`------------------------------------------------------------------------'

Run EXAMPLE.BAT inside command prompt to see the customization
possibilities.

Creating new levels

    Make level picture and background picture to different PCX files.
    Note that the format of PCX image files must 8-bit (256 colors).
    Be sure that the pictures use the same palette and use only the
    colors which are available (see table below). When the pictures
    are ready you can use CONV-utility to create YOURLEV.KOP file.
    Note that the filename extension must be ".KOP" so the game finds
    it. Start CONV without parameters to see help on how to use it.
    Look at EX_MAP.PCX, EX_BACK.PCX for example level graphics.

        Table of reserved and usable color values in palette:

              0   = flying space
             1-7 = colors of water (use color 1 to draw the water)
              7 = mark water wave places with this (use thin lines)
              8 = color of water bubbles
              9 = spot for ammo picking - mark some spots with this color
                    to level and don't use this color on level drawing
            10-14 = colors of base
              15  = reserved
           16-127 = free to use for drawing level
          128-255 = reserved

        Parallax backgroundmap size calculation formula:

                                  (LevelWIDTH-320)
            Backgroundmap_WIDTH = ---------------- + 320
                                          2

                                  (LevelHEIGHT-240)
           Backgroundmap_HEIGHT = ----------------- + 240
                                          2

        Parallax backgroundmap picture can be larger than the
        minimum size but then only portion of that is used.

Using & creating external music files

    You can use external music files by enterint /mFILE.KMU parameter
    when starting the game. KMU means the music init file (see below).

    Example external music init file. Numbers mean orders in the
    sound data. There should be max 16 channels in the music (original
    music uses only 8 channels).

    Look at EXAMPLE.KMU and EXAMPLE.S3M for example external music.

        - - -----starts-here---------------cut------- - -
            ; My external music init file
            ; ---------------------------
            file=mytune.s3m
            startmenu=0
            status=5
            endgame=6
            info=7
            ; ... game musics ...
            game=9
            game=14
            game=20
            game=29
            game=32
            # order infos must terminate with line which starts with "#"
            ; this line won't be processed
        - - -------ends-here---------------cut------- - -

    Tag types:
              file = tune filename (supported types: XM, S3M, MOD, MTM)
         startmenu = menu music order
            status = status (or "level change") music order
           endgame = match ending music order
              info = infoscreen music order
              game = game background music order -
                     there can be multiple (max 256) of them
