Suomen ensimmäinen kaupallinen videopeli Chesmac julkaistiin Telmac 1800 -tietokoneelle vuonna 1979. Seuraavalla vuosikymmenellä VIC-20:n ja Commodore 64:n tullessa markkinoille alkoi käytännössä varsinainen harrastustoiminta sekä pelien julkaiseminen laajemmassa mittakaavassa.
